The Day I Remembered I Was Allowed to Smile: How I Built Retired and Realizing
The Day I Remembered I Was Allowed to Smile
How I Built Retired and Realizing

By Geezell · Retired and Realizing · June 2026
I was sitting in my car. Running errands. A Luther Vandross song came on and I felt real good — the kind of good that settles in your chest and makes you want to share it with somebody. So I pressed record.
I had messed around with recording myself before. Little moments, nothing serious. But this one was different.
This time I was talking TO someone. I was looking into that camera and telling my audience — people I hadn't even met yet — I never knew retirement could be so good. And when I posted it, the feedback came back warm and real and completely unexpected in the best way.
"I never knew retirement could be so good." — That first video said everything Retired and Realizing would become.
That video in the car, singing to Luther, feeling good enough to share it — that was the beginning of Retired and Realizing.
And this is the story of how it happened.
The Name Came First
When I started my TikTok page, I already knew what to call it: Retired and Realizing.
Because that is exactly what was happening.
Once I retired, I began to realize something that 26-plus years inside the correctional system had quietly buried: all that tension, firmness, direct order, command type energy — everything I had been taught in my career — was not what I was supposed to carry on in my everyday communication outside those restricted walls of the last 26 plus years of my life.
"I realized that I can smile authentically. That I can laugh authentically. That I can show I'm human and that is a beautiful thing."
That realization is the whole brand. And the more I leaned into what Retired and Realizing actually means to me, the more the bridge between a car video and a real community started to form.
What Retirement Actually Felt Like — From Day One
People expect this story to start with struggle. With confusion. With the dark silence of a career suddenly gone.
That is not my story.
Retirement was great from the very beginning. Realizing I had time — actual, unhurried, it-belongs-to-me time — to do so many of the things I had been unable to do for over two decades: that is what I realized. That is what I became so excited about.
The freedom was not abstract. It was immediate. And that joy — that real, specific, earned joy — is exactly what I wanted to show on TikTok.
Not a performance. Not a highlight reel. The actual thing.
If you are searching for 'what does life after public service feel like' — it can feel like this. Like a door swinging open. Like time finally belonging to you.
When the Community Started Responding
After I posted that first video, people started telling me things I did not fully anticipate.
They said I helped brighten their day. That my smile took them somewhere good. That whatever song I was singing carried them to a happy place in their own lives.
That felt real. Not just nice — real. Because I was not trying to entertain people. I was trying to reach people. And something in that first video crossed whatever invisible line exists between content and connection.
"People told me my smile took them to a happy place. That still feels good today."
And that feedback — that early warmth from people I had never met who felt something when they watched — told me this was bigger than a personal page.
This was a community waiting to be named.

Who This Community Is Actually For
Retired and Realizing was built for a very specific person.
It was built for the public service provider who goes unnoticed most days. For the person who shows up with consistency — putting out fires, ensuring everyone else is safe, fed, medicated, and clothed — and does it again the next day without fanfare.
It was built for the person who might not be able to see the finish line right now. The one who is still inside the career wondering if it gets better. The one who just retired and does not know what to do with all this quiet.
Here is what I want that person to know:
You are providing services your community relies on to — real talk — function. You have done good. And you are going to continue to do good. After you retire, a whole other life can and will begin and grow on your terms.
You are on course for even greater joy and satisfaction.
"There is life after public service, and Retired and Realizing is your community to come, sit, be still."
Why I Built It — And What It Means to Me
I spent 26-plus years in the correctional system across two states. I started in NYDOC and built my career from there. And when I walked out for the last time in August 2025, I knew two things:
One — retirement could be everything I hoped it would be.
Two — nobody had built the space I needed. A space specifically for people like me. Correctional professionals. Public service veterans. The people the world moves on from without a parade.
So I built it.
Not from a strategy document. Not from a business plan. From a car, with Luther Vandross playing, feeling real good — and deciding to press record.
What "Retired and Realizing" Really Means
I want to say this plainly, because it is the foundation of everything:
Retired and Realizing is not just a brand name. It is the actual experience of stepping out of a career that demanded everything and slowly — sometimes suddenly — realizing that you are still here. That you are still whole. That there is a whole world out there and you are going to enjoy it to the best of your ability.
The tension you carried was real. The command energy was necessary inside those walls. But outside them? You get to be human again. Fully, freely, loudly human.
That is what this community celebrates. Not retirement as an ending — as the most powerful beginning of your life.
If you are searching for 'how to find yourself after retirement' or 'who am I without my career' — this community was built for exactly that question.
Come Through
If you have been reading this and something is landing — some part of this story feels familiar, or like something you have been waiting to hear — I want you to know:
The Retired and Realizing community is for you. It was built for you.
When you are ready, it is here. Come through. I am here. It is okay.
This is your community, sing with me.
